An important component of data governance is having a data system inventory.  Data at an organization needs to be understood, individually and collectively, and that can’t be done without a data system inventory.  Organizations need to take defined steps to build their data system inventory and have a process to maintain.

An important component of data governance is the request of data.  Organization’s need an established data request process that is known and easy to use.  The life cycle of data requests consists of inquiries about data, requests for deliverables, analysis of report details and data definitions, report development and report delivery.

An important component of data governance (and data quality) is reference data or valid lists.  An unexpected change a reference data list could have big impact such as reports not working.  There must be a process in place with data steward involvement when reference data is changed or new additions.
